Video of Egypt’s bloody clashes as protesters defy curfew in Cairo

Thousands of protesters in Egypt defied an evening curfew in Cairo on Saturday night, standing their ground in a resounding rejection of President Hosni Mubarak’s attempt to hang onto power with promises of reform and a new government. Clashes broke out as police protecting the Interior Ministry near the site opened fire at a funeral procession for a dead protester, possibly because it came too close to the force. Video from the scene showed crowds of protesters running through the streets as tear gas canisters were fired in amongst them. Several young men could later be seen staggering through the streets sporting bloodied wounds. Some of the severely injured were taken to a nearby mosque which was being used as a makeshift medical centre. Cairo appeared to be relatively calm early Sunday as residents reflected after another day and night of protest and political upheaval in the Egyptian capital.
