Used Engines
There is quite a difference between a used engine and one that has been rebuilt. Too many people use these terms interchangeably and that can lead to some huge problems for them later on.
Used engines are those that come from equipment or vehicles that have already been in operation. They may have been wrecked so the vehicle shell is no longer good but the engine is still workable. Many people decide to upgrade from the engine that came in their vehicle. They want more power and performance and the only way they are going to do it is to make such changes.
Sometimes you can just modify the current engine and leave it in there instead of completely replacing it. With a rebuilt engine you are getting one that has been in poor shape and then completely redone. Manufacturers are able to take these older engines and update them so they are able to resell them at a very good profit. They have had the pistons, bearings, and other necessary pieces completely reworked.
A used engine is often going to cost you the least but it depends on who you get it from and the circumstances surrounding it being available. However, most used engines come as is and you won’t have any warranty on them. Rebuilt engines do cost you more but you will find that peace of mind that comes with the warranty is well worth it.
You definitely want to be very careful when you are considering a used engine. If you can get it for a very low price though and it lasts for a couple of years in your car then it is a great investment. With the amount of time it takes to get these engines in and out of a vehicle though you don’t want to invest in something you will have to replace in about six months again.
If you keep your eyes open though you can stumble across some excellent deals on used engines. Let local towing companies, repair shops, and junk yards know what you are in the market for. This way if they get newer vehicles with low miles that are too damaged to repair they may be able to sell you the salvaged engine.
Diesel Engines
The diesel engine has been around since the late 1800’s. This particular design allows the vehicle to benefit from having fuel pumped into it after the air has compressed and the fuel is able to be ignited. The fuel and air don’t have to first be mixed as they do in a gasoline engine. You will also find that they don’t have spark plugs either. Many of the smaller diesel engines glow plugs though that allow the vehicle to start much easier.
A diesel engine depends on compression to get the air and the fuel mixed together. As a result the engine experiences less wear and tear than many other types of gasoline engines. This can result in the equipment lasting for much longer. Most diesel vehicles aren’t much more than regular ones when you are talking about basic pickups. When you start talking about big pieces of equipment though there is definitely a difference.
You will likely find diesel engines in heavy duty types of equipment. This includes diesel pickup trucks, construction equipment, and semi trucks that are used to haul materials all over the country. The way in which a diesel engine works doesn’t have much to do with the power behind it. That has more to do with the overall design of the engine. You will even find vehicles out there with high performance diesel engines.
Diesel engines are often louder than other types of engines though and that tends to annoy some people. Diesel engines have a very distinct idling sound that some people just think is excessive. It isn’t something you can easily hear when you are inside of the cab though. The additional noise is the result of the pistons working. A diesel engine can be either a two or four stroke based on the number of cylinders it has.
With the cost of gasoline continuing to rise all over the country, people are starting to look more at diesel engines. The cost of this type of fuel has stayed consistently lower than gasoline over the past couple of years. You can also get diesel fuel at almost all of the pumps out there so it won’t inconvenience you to use such a vehicle.
Rebuilt Engines
Buying an engine isn’t cheap but sometimes it is a necessity if you want to keep your vehicle operational. You may want to enhance the performance of your vehicle with an upgraded version. You may have too many miles on your current engine and it just isn’t working as it should or as reliable as it once was. One way to get a great price on an engine that will be in excellent working condition is to get one rebuilt.
Almost all rebuilt engines come with a warranty on them for a specific period of time. You should never buy one that doesn’t as this will still be a purchase that can cost you a couple of thousand dollars. This warranty will likely be for a specific period of time or a specific amount of miles. Once you reach one of them your engine is no longer covered.
The cost of the engine itself isn’t too bad but the labor involved will definitely be costly. If you are able to put in the new engine on your own you will spend hours doing it but save yourself a considerable amount of money in the process. Even if you have to hire a friend to help you make it move along faster you are going to come out ahead.
Before a rebuilt engine is sold you can be sure it has been carefully inspected. They have been taken apart and then redone with all of the old and worn down parts being redone. Everything has been modified to the specifications of the manufacturer as well as cleaned. This is why you don’t need to worry about a rebuilt engine working for you. It is less expensive as all of the basic parts are already there. They buy the old engines from people for a low price, rework them, and then sale them for a nice profit.
A great deal of work takes place in the area of the pistons on a rebuilt engine. They are made to specifically fit a size of cylinder. The bearings are also bored out, smoothed, and fully lubricated. The bearings are something that really take a beating on older engines so plenty of time is spent in this particular area.
Performance Engines
Performance engines are built for speed and they are much more powerful than a regular engine that you will get in most cars. Sports cars and muscle cars are well known for their performance. This is due to what you will find under the hood as well as the price you will pay for the vehicle. It is possible to get a vehicle with a standard engine and then to modify it on your own to get more performance out of it.
On the racing circuit, it is all about performance. With drag racing you have to have a vehicle that runs consistently so you can have an excellent dial in time. In this type of racing you have to get the closest to your dial in time without breaking out. This means you need a good run every time you take it down the track.
With other types of racing such as NASCAR, you need to have a vehicle with a very fast engine. At the same time you have to work to get it as light as you possibly can. The winner of this type of race is the first one to complete the required number of laps. Performance engines are a vital part of getting an edge on the competition in order to hold onto that number one spot.
Paying for performance engines in race cars takes a great deal of money. Most of the time the top contenders are able to get sponsors to help them cover the expenses. Those racing teams that have a particular type of performance engine in there often place stickers on their cars. This is a great way to advertise for the company that they are using their materials. If they do well on the track it is an added bonus because other people will want to buy them to do as well.
Performance engines can cost thousands of dollars though. It takes some expertise to put them in. You would never realize this though from watching professional pit crews. They are able to change them in just a couple of hours. Sometimes they have to be able to get the car completely redone in less time than that in order to make it to the next round on time.
Engines
Engines are designed to produce power for equipment, machinery, and especially vehicles to be able to move. There are a great deal of parts under any hood that make up the engine. If one of them is damaged or not working properly you can be sure it is only a matter of time until you have some serious issues with your particular vehicle or equipment.
In order to get the longest life out of your engine you need to offer routine maintenance. Checking the levels of fluids in it including your oil, transmission fluid, and brake fluid all keep your engine lubricated. If you are running low on these items though it will cause your engine to have to work harder than it should. Take care of leaks immediately and always get your oil changed every three months or every three thousand miles.
An engine can operate on gasoline or diesel. Both of these are types of fuel that require a mixture of components to take place before the equipment or vehicle will be able to start. Hybrid engines often include a combination of battery cells for power and another form of fuel for back up when they battery cells are out of power.
Engines can be different sizes based on the amount of power that they offer. High performance vehicles have larger engines than those used for regular daily commuting. The cost of an engine can be several thousands of dollars. It really depends on the manufacturer, the warranty, and they type of engine you buy.
It is possible to save a great deal of money with a rebuilt engine instead of a new one. This is an older engine that has had the various components on it reworked. For many people this is a viable way to keep their vehicle operating as it should. It is time consuming to take out engines though and to put them back in. With so many pieces to the puzzle most people leave it up to professional mechanics.
Since an engine is such a vital part of equipment and vehicles you really need to do all you can to take care of them. Some people have vehicles with more than 200,000 miles on them and they still run great. Others won’t even turn 100,000 due to poor maintenance on them.
